This place is fantastic!! 2/5/2009

So this is my first review on citysearch but I had to make sure that no one believes the review about bong water and rap music. Seriously, that person must have walked into the wrong place and got all types of confused from their own three day old bong water. I have been going to Aroy's for over ten years. I went to high school downtown and have been working downtown for the past six. I regularly call an order in and it never takes more than fifteen minutes. I have turned crazy amounts of friends, co-workers and ex-boyfriends onto this amazing food! My best friend lives in Florida now but as soon as she comes home we go to 'thai food' as we've called since our sophomore year of high school. I have tried many other places but this by far is my favorite!! The hot and spicy noodles are on the dinner menu but they are terrific!! By far my favorite, but the yellow curry, pad thai, pad see ew and fried rice are all exceptional as well!! Pros: Great lunch spot especially for to go orders, exceptional service, fantastic food Cons: maybe parking if you aren't in a smart park mood. kinda busy to sit down at lunchtime during the week. more

Fantastic food on a budget 7/27/2008

I see one person gave it one star, complaining about no veggies (a more usual complaint about Asian restaurants would be too much veggie, not enough meat!) and rap music. I've been there many times and have never noticed music, which would mean that any music was either Thai or not there at all. As for the food, ignore the troll, this is by far the best Thai food bargain in town. The only downside for some is that it's ""dry"" (no alcohol). Since I go there for lunch mainly, this doesn't really bother me. If you want a curry to start with, I'd recommend the Red Curry (probably the most popular Thai curry and one many people would use as a benchmark) or the Panang, which is actually my own favorite. If you don't want curry, their Thai Basil and Pad Thai are almost without compare. Pros: Some of the best Thai food in town (and I have tried most of them) Cons: If you want to impress a date with a potlatch style expenditure of cash, forget it: It'd be hard to spend more than $25 here on a date more

Low quality 6/3/2008

You know your meal is going to be bad, when you can't even drink the water. Three day old bong water... The food was ok, but had no veggies in it at all. It may be cheap, but you get what you pay for here. To top it all off they had really offensive gangster rap playing from a boom box on the counter. Really people?! Save yourself the disappointment... Pros: Cheap... Cons: low quality food, offencive music, no veggies, BAD water more

Great no frills low priced lunch thai place downtown 11/14/2007

The atmosphere is casual and ""no frills,"" but all the staff is friendly, fills your water, and makes some great classic thai dishes. The prices are also quite stellar for the amount and quality of the food. Pros: food, quality, quantity, price, friendly Cons: ambience more

PAD THAI! 9/26/2007

Order the Pad Thai.. With Chicken or veggies.. It's great! I get it once a week. You will be full after your huge portion, I guarantee it. The cook and waitress are super nice. Good people. Pros: Great food for great price. Cons: Small place. more

Best Pineapple Fried Rice 5/3/2007

This is a great lunch place. My coworkers and I stumbled onto it one day at lunch, and are so glad we did. It's a little hole in the wall with very little sitting room - but it's worth waiting for a table. The fried rice is what I go back for, and ask for pineapple to be added to give it extra flavor. It's wonderful! The service is great too. There is only the hostess and the cook - the hostess is so sweet and helpful. Pros: Great Food; Great Service; Great Price Cons: Lacks Seating Space more

yuck 11/29/2006

bland pad thai and a waitress with a really annoying lil girl voice. the garnish ( a lime) had more flavor than the noodles. eww!! more

Best eat for the buck! 9/15/2006

I have been in love with this resturant since I was in high-school, when I seldom had much spending money. It has stayed a favorite through my starving college student years and I still visit whenever I am in the mood for tasty Thai that I don't have to break the bank for. My favorite combo remains pad thai and an order of yellow curry. This $14 order can easily stuff three people with hearty appetites. Pros: Fast service with a friendly smile and wonderful inexpensive food. Cons: Only one is that it could be called a hole in the wall. more

A definite find 2/26/2006

I am writing this review strictly because I never want this place to close. Some advice: Best thing to get is the coconut soup. Hands down. We have tried many - from Typhoon to E-san. This stands out, other dishes are good, but get this if you want a new favorite dish in Portland. The waitress (same one always) is super, super nice. Pros: Soup, Service , Price Cons: Ambience more

Thai-rific! 9/8/2005

Great, authientic thai food at prices you won't believe! You definately won't overpay for Americanized food like you do at most places. The owners are some of the nicest people around, and did I mention the food is unbelievably good?! Pros: Great food, friendly owners Cons: PACKED at lunch time! more

feels like home 10/13/2004

I have been a regular customer for over 5 years. Aroy is my favorite Thai restaurant and I definitely bring my ""out of town"" guests here! The owners are wonderful cooks in addition to being friendly and welcoming. I feel I get more than just ""food"" when I go there. My favorites are the Yum Woon Sen and Fried Rice. Pros: , delicious, inexpensive more

Real Thai Taste 6/6/2004

I'm Thai and I can guarantee that the taste of food here is the closet to the real Thai food in Thailand. Must try are ""Pad Thai"" and ""Sukiyaki"". Best Thai restaurant downtown indeed!! Pros: yummy, very cheap, friendly more

Aroy maybe; Thai not! 7/8/2003

I'm married to a Thai woman and spend a minimum of 2 months, each year, in Bangkok. Because of our situation, everyone asks ""what's 'real' Thai?"" We have been looking for such a place Portland, to share Thai cuisine. Because of the raves, and claims of the ""real deal"", we tried Aroy. Unfortunately, although tasty ""asian"" take out, the cuisine is far from authentic Thai. It's more a Chinese variant, complete with chopsticks! Aroy (delicious) maybe; Authentic Thai,... not! Pros: Cheap, fast, friendly Cons: not Thai, no parking more

Middle of Thai Road 11/16/2002

Aroy Thai is the Portland Thai food equivalent of a great diner: an honest meal at a great price. Tucked into a downtown hole-in-the-wall, it will never win any decorating contests, but during a hectic downtown lunch hour Aroy comes through with solid Thai. Despite many claims, it's not the best pad thai in town, but it's right up there. And they offer vegetarian -- which can be surprisingly difficult in popular Asian cuisine. Best of all chile-heads can challenge themselves to Aroy's spice rankings: from 1 to 20 stars. Most people don't go over 4, but you'll love pushing the envelope. Solid. Pros: location, quick, vegetarian more

9.0 8/19/2002

Cashew Nut Chicken & pad se yeu are more favorites. Great service & nice atmosphere. Pros: Good food, great service, niice portions Cons: limited seating more

True Thai!!!!!! 7/11/2002

The most authentic thai food restaurant in town with the friendliest mom/pop atmosphere! Better take cash or a check with you because no credit accepted (the only drawback). Honestly, we spent 2 weeks in Thailand last year and the food is identical!!! Honest, caring and personable staff! Pad Thai is ""the real thing""- not an American spinn off! Just delightful people and fabulous food! You can't go wrong!!! more
