Over some glasses of malbec from Bautista Simona, chef and c 12/3/2010

Over some glasses of malbec from Bautista Simona, chef and co-owner of Apertivo, Ken Cassinelli, smiles about his food like a first crush. He is telling me that it?s the puttenesca pasta, no, the lamb shank, that needs to be tried. While we discuss their relative merits, the only true option has been jogging around us since the beginning: get them both. more

Mediocre. 10/12/2009

I had been here a couple of times about a year back, and enjoyed myself, so we came back on 10/10/09 to have dinner with friends. We had four people, and we ordered a lot of dishes. The cooking quality was -- at best -- mediocre. Figs with prosciutto that had been cooked completely into submission -- the figs were oozing out, and the prosciutto was paper-dry. Tasteless, gooey egglant parmegiana. Tough, dry lamb osso buco. Tasteless calamari. All four of us were salting the food, to try to pry some taste out. Pros: I will never have to go back. Cons: The food. more

Great Authentic Pasta 5/5/2008

Great authentic pasta nothing like those commercial pasta places, this food is great and with an even greater price, They have amzaing food hot and fresh great service, there water taste really good nothing like tap water (eww) they have great bread sticks to start you off, the food is made to order so it may take a while but nothing extremly crazy, grilled vegies are the best, totally go there the waiting line can get a bit long but it's so wort it and for the wine lovers they have hundreds of wines to choose from Pros: good pasta and wine for great price Cons: on ocassions the wait more

Affordable tapas with an awesome wine list 11/5/2007

Apertivo is a prime example of the good things happening to North Park these days. The area is filled with revitalization, new restaurants are opening up all over the place that you wouldn't expect. As a result of being in North Park, the owner wisely (and fairly) priced the food and the wine list so as to not scare the neighborhood away. There is a huge variety of (mostly) Italian-style tapas. Some of my favorites include the lasagne, the asparagas, and the calamari! They have a great wine list, with, I believe, at least 60 wines available BY THE GLASS! How many restaurants offer a good wine list by the glass?! The prices on the wine are also reasonable, and they have some good stuff from all over the world, not just California. The place does feel a bit odd when you first walk in. It's a big open room, and there are no dividers or partitions to break up the noise, so it gets VERY loud in there. It's almost like being in a bar. I don't really care for the noise level, and I wish the owner would do something about it. But, I'm willing to overlook it because I love the food and the wine list. They recently expanded, taking over the space next door, and the service did slow down a bit because I think they were playing a little bit of catch-up, but I'm sure they've probably resolved that since my last visit. Definately a great find in the heart of North Park! Pros: Great food, wine list, friendly staff Cons: Loud, sounds like you're in a bar! more
