Too Much Hype 5/25/2007

The food was fairly good but they ran out of the two most popular things on the menu. It was really crowded, and the service was rather slow. The menu was a little boring, but the honey mustard was exquisite. more

Great Vegetarian Food for Vegetarians and Carnivores, Alike 11/3/2006

This place is great - low-key in ambience, and great veggie/vegan options that will even satisfy those that usuallly only ""do meat."" I like the neatloaf and I always enjoy the accompanying salad (although you can also get nan) and I often get a smoothie. The ""chicken"" in the burrito actually tastes like chicken! The prices are reasonable and the staff accomodating. Solo diners are welcome and do not feel conspicuous - it is a warm, all-inclusive, low-key dining experience. They are a a welcome presence in the Civic Center area - a zone I often find lacking in good, inexpensive, and thoughtful eateries. Pros: Great Vegetarian/Vegan Food Cons: Civic Center location is lackluster more

Awesome vegetarian 'chicken nuggets!' 9/24/2006

I'm a vegetarian and my boyfriend is not. We both ordered an appetizer of the chicken nuggets, and they were amazing! He loves his meat, but he said these were even better than the real thing. They really were delicious! Pros: Great "chicken nuggets" Cons: Lighting could use work more

Good, wholesome food at great prices 9/23/2006

This place is a cool, relaxing blue oasis in the middle of a very busy, hectic area. It doesn't look that special from the outside, but the moment you walk in you feel the soothing atmosphere. The portions are extremely generous and the prices are very reasonable. They have wonderful, fresh salads and tasty wraps and sandwiches, but my favorite is the neatloaf. Great! They make their own (mostly vegan) desserts there too and they're great. They're pretty busy at lunchtime, so if you really want to enjoy the relaxing atmosphere, try to go between 2 and 8 p.m. when they close. Pros: Relaxed and friendly, generous servings, reasonable prices Cons: Crowded at lunchtime more

Serene healthy urban oasis 9/1/2006

neat-loaf is the most original dish that no other veggie restaurant come close to it. the place brings a little serenity to the otherwise, rapidly changing neighborhood in downtown san francisco. and as a city dweller, i welcome their peaceful environment while serving hearty and healthy meals to us public. a great place to visit before an opera or ballet. i also think the staff in sari is beautiful. i repect their practice, and i appreciate their cuisine. Pros: location, food, unlimited yogi tea! Cons: funny hours on wkends more

Good vegetarian! 7/11/2006

Great vegetarian selection with lots of vegan options...pizza, pasta, indian influenced dishes, salads, soups, not to mention all those vegetarian ""meats"". I didn't know what to order and went with what turned out to be a pretty packed falafel with a side of green (or could've had the pasta) salad. The menu rotates a bit in the area of soups and curries. Kind staff who are concerned about where you sit so as to accomodate all customers. And yes, as mentioned in the editorial profile, the walls are BRIGHT white and there's a tv in the back playing videos which you honestly won't be able to stop watching. Pros: Large selection of options Cons: BRIGHT white walls, stingy on water and napkins more

Cheap good veg & vegan brkfast; BEST muffin 4/6/2006

Good selection of vegetarian and vegan food - pancakes and french toast are vegan. The orange french toast was chewy (great bread), the scrambled tofu was good. The regular toast was overdone. The prices here were low; the music was peaceful. The atmosphere is like a serene cafeteria. We ordered a vegan mango-peach-blueberry muffin, a slice of vegan strawberry-coconut cake, a vegan chocolate cookie, and a regular banana? cookie to go. The vegan mango-peach-blueberry muffin is the best muffin I've had, and unfortunately, I've had more than my fair share. It was moist, light, and delicious. The strawberry-coconut cake was good - it had pieces of fresh strawberry, but it didn't have enough coconut and the icing was too sweet. The other items were average. Be aware that they close for two weeks in April and in either Aug or Sep. Pros: vegan pancakes/fr tst, bargain, clean bathrooms Cons: traditional breakfast, no unique brkfst item more

User review by harajukugirl 3/21/2005

A friend and I went here today based on the ""Best Of SF"" for vegetarian food and I'm glad we did. The menu had so many things I wanted but we both went for the burrito with green salad as our side. Thier burrito is HUGE and very flavorful. All of the staff was very nice and pleasant. The only draw back is if you're looking for ambiance this isn't the place (sort of reminds me of a cafeteria). Great place...will definitly go back! Pros: big menu for vegi's, friendly waitstaff Cons: no ambiance more

Neat Loaf rules! 3/14/2005

There are lots of good choices here, but the legendary Neat Loaf is reason #1 to head to Ananda Fuara. It's supremely tasty, with a nice tangy sauce and a tasty side of homemade mashed potatoes & mushroom gravy. I like this stuff better than the meat based version. The Neat Loaf sandwich is great too! Prices are higher than one would expect for the location and tacky decor, and the service is inconsistent, but it's worth it for the Loaf of the Gods. Pros: Neat Loaf, Neat Loaf!, Neat Loaf!! Cons: Kinda spendy, Tacky decor, Crummy location more

Wost veggie food 12/27/2004

Nothing organic. My girlfriend ordered some steamed veggies and they were overcooked and soggy. The Hummus dip had a brown covering on it and didn't taste fresh. I would not recommend this place. Cons: , Nothing organic more

Food is wonderful, but service is rude! 8/16/2004

I was very dissapointed when I went to Ananda Fuara. The server we had was rude, and seemed annoyed that she had to actually work. We must have sat there for 20 minutes just waiting for someone to come by (there were only a few occupied tables in the restaruant.) The table behind us was filled with 4 or 5 of the staff, and we overheard them saying cruel things about another member of the staff after she walked away from the table. (There went our faith in there ""peaceful spirituality"".) The place seemed very pretentious, and fake. Very different from the experience I thought we would have. The food however was VERY good, (we had the Neatloaf and a Vegan Chicken Pesto Wrap) but the negative experience really affected that. I'd recommend trying the food, but call in and order or get it to go. Pros: Great Food more

Even meat eaters love this place!!! 7/16/2004

Im a hardcore meat eater but I love when my veggie friends take me here! The neatloaf sandwich is simply scrumptious! A great place for a quick lunch or when in that akward middle market area...and even though its a little akward to see blond haired white women in traditional Indian garb, well, its worth the sight... more

Decent Veggie Food for the Price 12/27/2002

Yummy stuff for a decent price. No gourmet offerings here, but the food is solid and satisfying. The proportions are enormous, particularly the salads. Pros: Inexpensive Cons: Too bright more

Vegetarian Oasis 9/21/2002

My wife and I were amazed to find this place and others so close to our hotel on Market in the Civic Center area. The many street people give the area a feel that wouldn't suggest you could dine so well. The ambience of Ananda Fuara is relaxed and the staff were prompt and helpful. The vegetarian menu compared very favorably to other here and in our native New Orleans. I had the Samosas dinner and it was delicious. My wife had a greek salad. Everything was fresh and nicely presented. Pros: Fresh ingrediants., Friendly staff. Cons: No Credit Cards. more

Not a vegetarian but like this food 9/13/2002

I am not a vegetarian but I think this place has great food. I've been here often and have never been disappointed. Pros: Good food, Good service, Friendly atmosphere Cons: Kinda murky location more

We love this place! 8/24/2002

We've eaten here 25-30 times over the years. We's eat there more often if we lived closer. The food is terrific... we tried almost everything on the menu. Our favorites: tofu scramble for breakfast; neatloaf, samosas, veggie burgers, dahl and hummus for lunch/dinner. My husband is a strict vegan ;our son is a picky eater ...We're all happy. We have always found the service fine and friendly....the staff may be followers of Sri Chimnoy... so what...they are down to earth and nice not phoney nice like some pricier snobbier places. The place is an oasis ....very clean and comfortable. Great food, good prices, friendly staff, very pleasant eating atmosphere......what more could one want? To those whiners who criticize the ""new age"" atmosphere just go eat somewhere else! Whenever we've gone there the customers......business types, students, visitors, miscellaneous (like my family) love it! Pros: Great vegetarian food, Pleasant oasis, Friendly staff more

Very unique! 6/26/2002

If you like to try new things, this is the place for you. Everything is so good. Neatloaf is the best. more
