What happened to Amay's? Too bad. 8/7/2011

Mr. Amaya, What happened? I've been dining with you and your families since you were on Berkman Drive. I patronized your Bastrop location while it was open, as well as your Oak Hill location while it was open. After dining with you 3 or 4 times a month, many times more than that, my love affair with Amaya's has come to an end. I visited your new location on Reinli and I35 this morning. Turns out it was only a visit as we left without ever being seated. We were offered seats at the bar, but a big guy like me doesn't perch like a tweety bird. We agreed to wait for a table and were given a pager. After 3 (THREE) parties who entered and were seated, 2 without even signing in, just greeted and walked to a table we left. Your hostess is not very hospitable. Instead we went and spent our $$$ with a competitor. I called from the car to speak to a manager. After holding for 12+ minutes I finally spoke to a girl who said she was in charge today. From her attitude and condescending tone of voice I can understand why the help is acting the way they do to your customers. They have a lousy example to follow. So this afternoon I'm spending my time posting this review on as many sites as I can find. If you don't want your customers, I will do all in my power to save them a bad experience and send them to your competitors. Too bad, you've always had the best food and good help. I guess you just let it get away from you. Hope you find the resources to address and correct the problems that are destroying your good name. more

New location's nice but the food isn't 6/21/2011

Wow imagine being excited waiting for the new location to open, imagine missing one of my office's favorite lunch spots, imagine FINALLY getting to go yesterday for lunch and discovering while the new locations nice the food ISN'T! Amaya's changed the chips & cheese, the salsa wasn't even spicy and the food was so bland I couldn't believe it. It was extremely disappointing. I don't know if the owners have changed or the cooks have but unless they get back to what made Amaya's a local favorite I don't see their customer's returning. The waitress was new and pretty but she got our order wrong, refilled our tea with the wrong type AND our to go teas tasted like soap. I wrote this on Facebook and they deleted it, bet you won't here because it's still the truth! more

Amaya's Taco Village 1/8/2011

randy o\r I was there on sat 1-8-11. when the waiter ask what we wanted to drink i ask for a glass of water with lots of ice and i got a glass with very litter ice. he took our order it took 30 mins to get our food and when we got out food he just walk away and we were just sitting there waiting for him to come back cause we did not have any silverware. i had to get up and ask another waiter for some silverware. then our waiter came back about 10 mins later and ask if we needed anything else we told him that we had to ask another watier for silverware . so then we ask for more water and it took him 15mins to give us water. we saw him just talking to other worker there. its been awhile since we been there and i had famliy that came in for out of town and there were Disappointed with the service,, \r oh by the time we got out sliverware the food was cool. more

Very good local mexican food! 7/7/2010

We all know that the chain Mexican food places are good..but when you want to eat local and contribute local this is one of the best places to go...they have the best chips & salsa, and to die for homemade corn tortillas ever!! I have had the taco plate and cheese enchiladas and they were pretty good...from what I've read, i will order the beef fajitas next time because they say it's really good! Pros: homemade corn tortillas Cons: sometimes a long wait more

Best fajitas in town! 12/17/2009

Since 2000, we've come to Amaya's for the fajitas and the fajitas only. We get the fajitas plate for two, which is enough food for four people, then take home whatever is left. The homemade chips and salsa are great, the service is acceptable (depending on who you get), and the prices are reasonable for the amount of food you get. I used to say that the fajitas were the only good thing on the menu, but this year the day after Thanksgiving we came here for breakfast and were pleasantly surprised to find it quite delicious. Everytime a visitor comes from outside Texas, we bring them here for some tex-mex, then to The Spaceship (Los Jaliscienses) for some mex-tex. No complaints so far! Pros: Fajitas are to die for, price is reasonable Cons: The rest of the menu is so-so... more

Completely and utterly disgusting. 8/3/2009

This is by far the worst plate of cheese enchilada's I have ever had. The tomatillo sauce was basically cheap, green-colored corn oil. ZERO flavor. Cheap cheese and thick, chewy tortillas. Aside from this, it was highly overpriced even though the menu said the enchiladas were the special for Monday at $5.99 (and it was actually Monday), my bill was over $10 after tip. \r \r First and absolutely the last trip! If you appreciate AUTHENTIC Mexican cuisine, this is NOT the place for it! Cons: ""Tomatillo mystery sauce"" more

Best cheese enchilladas 8/10/2008

Great cheese enchilladas and home made corn tortillas. This place is busy on the weekdays for lunch so get it to go. Make sure you get an order of the chips and hot sauce....it's fantastic. Pros: The food Cons: The Wait more

Crispy Tacos 7/22/2008

Wow! Nice crispy tacos & cheesy enchiladas. Fair, Tex-Mex, gringo-type food. Use of lots of yellow,... more

LOVE IT 7/5/2008

I absolutely love this restaurant. They have got great customer service and their menu is easy to look over. Their cheese enchiladas are the best. But if you are a meat kind of person, I would certainly get the ribs. It is so delicious. I usually share that plate with another person. I would totally recommend Amaya's to someone else. more

TV Dinner 4/8/2008

The service was great. However, I did not quite like the food. The cheese is low grade, the homemade taco shells tasted stale which makes me wonder if they are made ahead and then re-heated. The tamales were mushy and the meat in all of the dishes didn't have any flavor whatsoever. \r \r I didn't hate the experience but it was comparable to eating a TV dinner. Pros: Service Cons: Tastiness of food more

Chicken Tort. soup 2/7/2008

The chicken tort. soup and chicken tacos are soooo good. I've tried the chicken tort. soup at other places and no one seasons it just right like Amayas. The salsa and chips are also great. The salsa is not to spicy, just right. I go here whenever I can get over to that side of town. It's always pretty crowded which goes to show what a great austin establishment it is. Pros: great chicken receipes and service Cons: very crowded at times, always have to wait to be seated more

Satisfying Mexican food 11/6/2007

I've been going to Amaya's for 15+ yrs (about 3-5 times a year). They are middle of the road, nothing that is going to knock your socks off, just pretty consistent. Exactly what you want....I guess. They are probably best known for their tacos, very good. I've grown up eating at various mexican restaurants (El Patio, El Gallo, Dario's etc, etc) and they are comparable in product for price. Great breakfast specials during last week of the month (2 for 1's). Simply said a filling restaurant that will satisfy your mexican food craving. Pros: Quick service Cons: Ambience lacks more

Great food - great steak and enchiladas 4/16/2007

Ok, so you have to know these guys use the Governement cheese, but in my opinion this is the best. Sure, you can go to some other fancy Mexican restraurant and have some Americanized food, but this stuff is fattening and cheesy and just good. Pros: tasty food, authentic enough for TexMex Cons: fattening more

Best Beef Tacos 10/24/2006

When GF and I go into Austin, and its my turn to pick the place to eat, I usually choose Amayas just for their beef tacos. The meat is well-seasoned, and the fillings are plentiful (especially the cheese), but I think its the homemade corn tortillas that really makes them great. They are kinda half-fried, half-baked (kinda like me, I guess), giving them a unique texture and taste. The downside is that they are just in Austin. They used to have a place in Bastrop, but they closed it, much to my dismay. Pros: Beef Tacos Cons: Closed Bastrop Location more

Best Crispy Chicken tacos and homeade corn tortillas! 6/28/2006

Everytime our family goes to Amayas, the staff is very friendly and attentive, they always made sure we had our glasses full with iced-tea. The food is always nice and hot, and all of their tasty mexican food beats all the imitators out there in Austin, their enchiladas are delicious with their tasty red chili sauce, with tonz of cheese!! delicious!!...all their soups are excellent, --especially their tortillas soup!...they rate a 10 on our scale..you wont be dissappointed! Pros: Great Mexican Food, especially the Crispy Chicken tacos and all of their soups!! Cons: Parking is probably best in the rear of restaurant more

Below average food 5/7/2006

Enchilada's are not very good, and made with what seems to be imitation cheese. Don't complain because Manager's are rude and are not responsible for incorrect orders. Cons: pricey, crowded, below average food more

Not just for tacos 4/24/2006

I wouldn't recommend driving way across town to eat at Amaya's, but it's a great neighborhood joint. The servers are so friendly, the food is simple but always tasty, and the cost reasonable. The previous ratings only mention the tacos, but it's worth pointing out that the other dishes are good, too. I typically order the fish or chicken plate, and they're very good. This is also a great place to take children. The staff are very sweet to them. Pros: tasty, reliable food, very friendly staff, inexpensive Cons: crowded at lunch more

Wasn't like it used to be. 6/4/2005

Before this place got renovated the food was great but now, i think the food is priced too high for the amount and quality of food. There are far better Mex restaurants out there. I used to love the enchilada plate but now they jip you on rice and beans. The tacos i used to love but the meat just isn't flavored well. I absolutely love the Ice tea. And another negative is the tables are very small. Pros: Ice tea is great, Homeade corn tortilla Cons: too pricey, flour tortillas store, tables small more

Excellent 1/6/2005

When I eat at Amaya's it reminds me of eating with my family. The chicken tacos are delicious and are made the way they should be...frying a tortilla and not using a taco shell from a box. more

""Killer"" Tacos?? 7/7/2003

I have never before seen corn ""crispy"" tacos that were not in the lease crispy. They were large, but the tortillas were flabby, the meat was so-so, and the cheese was pure grease. How can people rate this place so highly? I just wasted $10 on a dinner that was not as good as Taco Cabana even. For my money, Chuy's has the best tacos in town that I have found yet. Cons: Flabby Tacos, Cheap Ingrediaents, Long Lines more
