Cruel and heartless 3/29/2012

I was told that this store is going to receive a huge shipment of baby bunnies and chicks to sell for Easter this weekend. I doubt these people have any clue that rabbits are hard work, live to be 10-years-old, and that they're probably WAY too young to be taken away from their mothers. They don't even care that thousands of rabbits get abandoned in their first year, or that 80-90% of all rabbits entering the city shelters are euthanized. They don't care because they just want to make a quick profit. more

Do not trust any information given to you at this place. 3/1/2012

I went there for advice on setting up an octopus tank, and left with the wrong equipment and wrong instructions. When I went back to speak with the owner, his wife was extremely rude and not helpful. After a long conversation (she is VERY rude, be aware!) she offered to give me half of the almost $300 I spent there back, which I, of course, did not accept, since they are the ones who do not know what they are doing (and should!). If you know 100% what you are doing, it?s one thing, but if you expect professional assistance, this is the wrong place. They will not be able to help you (because they don?t know anything, but prefer to give out wrong instructions than to be honest with you about it!!), and the owner does not accept responsibility for his employees? actions, so don?t expect him (or his wife) to be nice, because they are not. Just avoid the place; there are way better options in LA! Wish I had been told this a month ago. more

poor care of their animals, sick fish and bird 7/11/2010

I normally buy my fish from Nature Aquarium in West LA (great store!!!), but thought I would give my local store in Venice a chance! - to my deepest regrets! First I noticed that two of my purchased swordtail females were actually males with broken off tails!!! When I tried to return them the employees seemed nice and helpful, but the store owner kept asking them and me questions about why I was returning the animals and kept making me feel like I was the one who had done something wrong by purchasing them in the first place! Just that evening I am noticing ich on all of the neon tetras I bought there!!!! I swear I will neaver buy fish from there again and would not recomand anyone else to! Not to mention their very traumatized and feather plucking bird they keep at the register that is a perfect illustration on how they maintain all of their animals and how little they care! Cons: sick animals and no care for their well being more

i like the store and most of the staff is helpful, but there is just this one employee that is just so rude. But besides that they have a great selection of fish and other animals. more

No time to play with their animals? 5/9/2008

I was really excited to go to Allan's to buy my new hamster - my neighborhood pet store. I was shocked to find out that not only do they ""have no time"" to play with the pets in their store, they didn't know the ages of the hamsters, if they were friendly, where they had come from (""usually people drop them off""), or how long they had been there. They also have a no return policy and no guarantee that their pets are in good health. Pros: Know their fish, mom & pop, small store and accessible staff Cons: Don't know the pets they sell (other then fish) more

Great prices and even better service 3/31/2008

Keeping an aquarium is an expensive hobby, but Allan's makes it less so. Prior to coming here, we were getting our supplies at a place on 9th and Wilshire, which is ridiculously expensive. The prices at Allan's are great and they do not try to sell you things you do not need. The best part of Allan's, however, is their service. Staff is knowledgeable and helpful. more

Great Service 6/10/2006

I went to Allan's Aquarium because the water pump on my aquarium broke. I called several aquarium stores and they all wanted to charge me an arm and a leg to replace my water pump. When I called Allan's to check the price of their pumps the sales guy that answered the phone told me to come in and he'd take a look at the pump to see if it just needed to be serviced. As it turned out, all I needed was a ten dollar part. I was prepared to spend the money replace the pump completely, but he took the time to clean it out and replace the part for me. I was very impressed at the level of service I received and that the guy prevented me from spending more money than I had to. more

this place is great, especially the prices 12/14/2005

I recently made a trip down to Allan's Aquarium and Pet Center down in Venice and I was pleseantly surprised at not only the selection and the service, but also the low prices. Don't be fooled by the name Allan's Aquarium, because this place has everything from 8 foot boa constrictors to chinchillas. The fish selection is also very good, as they carry pondfish, fresh water fish and salt water fish. The salt water selection could be a little better, but they have a very good selection of tropical freshwater fish and pondfish, with the lowest prices I've seen. The service was also great as it seemed everyone knew what they were talking about and were very helpful and knowledgable. So I'd have to say that all and all Allan's would be my pet store of choice for the variety, the service and the surprisingly low prices. Pros: good selection, good help, low prices more
