delicious food, good service 1/8/2008

We eat out quite a bit, and like ethnic food. I don't know, honestly how ""authentic"" each ingredient is, but we thought the food was excellent, and quite delicious. We tried several appetizers, and a couple main courses. Really good. The service was good, but not the fastest. However, we told them we were in a bit of a hurry, and we actually did get out on time. Not bad.\r \r We're going back for my girlfriend's birthday - by her request!\r more

Great food! 9/11/2007

I was recently visiting LA and asked a local to recommend a place to eat. I was directed to Alexis. I can honestly say that whilst I was in LA this was the best meal I had had. The service was good and the chef was very attentative. Infact I was so pleased with it all that I went back the following day.\r Definately worth going back for! more

Not authentic, poor service and lame environment. 6/6/2006

I hate to do this because I have a great deal of respect for restaurant owners and how difficult their job can be. However, this particular establishment has been open nearly 35 years, so they should have the hang of it by now. I took my Greek boyfriend here last night hoping for an opportunity to inspire his faith in Los Angeles-Greek cuisine. We arrived at 9:00 PM and were seated promptly. Shortly thereafter, we were bombarded by the Chef's Portuguese wife (also a chef). While she was ""helpful"" with suggestions, she was aggressive and forced us to rush because she said the kitchen was closing very soon. Why the hell did she seat us then!!!!???? Our food was very hit or miss, mostly ""missing"" authentic Greek flavor. The Melizanosalata was so bizarre. The Dolmades were dry. The Spanikopita was missing several main ingredients. \r \r The most disappointing aspect of our dining experience was the fact that this woman forgot my boyfriend's main course altogether. Mine came and went and we waited patiently for his. Finally he addressed the situation and she responded with some really pathetic reason as to why she forgot this major detail. Then, instead of making it up she reiterated the kitchen was closed. So he only had an appetizer. We hoped she would make a classy move and try and compensate for her forgetfullness and comp us something....but no. She didn't so much as apologize until we were one foot out the door when she assured us she would give us something special ""next time"". Why not comp us right then and there???? She assumed we would come back and give them more business.\r \r Not authentic, unclassy service and lame environment. Pros: Lamb kabob Cons: Service, ambience, hours more

A long way from Greece, not even close. 6/6/2006

Im an international recording and touring musician originally from Astoria, Queens. I was brought up in a Greek home by my two Greek immigrant parents and two older brothers. All of which are talented in the kitchen. This place does not serve authentic Greek food. The lamb was great, but that's about it. I am not only an authority on Greek food because of my upbringing but also because I have been to Greece many times. They forgot one of our entrees and then the kitchen closed. It was a terrible dining experience. I have eated at some of the world's finest dining establishments as well as down home peasant food taverns. If the menu says hummus and tabouli this is yet another indication that they don't know what they're doing. Those dishes are not greek. It's like going to an Italian restaurant and seeing matza balls on the menu. Pros: Good Parking, Wine List Cons: Service, Food more

A Greek adventure in dining 10/6/2005

I have not been to Alexis' Restaurant for a little while; but I have eaten there many times, starting back in 1972, when it was a market that had middle eastern ingredients and some sandwiches. Then it began to add food, little by little. Monday nights, Alexis closed the Market and taught Greek Cooking. He has the best recipes and they shine in his restaurant. He is attentive to his guests and always providing a wonderful dining adventure. The wines are superb. It might not be on Ventura Boulevard or La Cienaga; but it is well worth the trip to Northridge! Pros: Great food, Great service, Good value Cons: A bit out of the way, Parking might be hard more

I'm a little surprised this place has escaped review. Though Greek/Mediterranean restaurants are typically a little pricey, this place gives you not only good food, but value. Still, we're talking $20 per. If I had any complaint it would be the interior decor - boring. But you do have a choice of a nice outdoor patio (overlooking a strip mall). This place is worth a return visit in my book. more
