Best Pizza in Manayunk! 10/2/2011

The pizza is by far the best and most authentic pizza in the Philadelphia area. The dough and sauce is made fresh every morning. They throw it in the oven and swirl the sauce around the cheese just like at the Jersey shore. WARNING: If you are a WASP visiting from the South, you probably have grown accustomed to and prefer the southerner pizza AKA pizza soft crust pizza made from refrozen dough with ketchupy Prego sauce and overloaded with bland cheap waxxy shrink cheese like they use in the less savory national chains. Alex's pizza is high quality and real-deal authentic, like the way they make in in the old country, and NOT crappy southern over-Americanized WASP pizza like they rampantly produce in the south. If you are uncultured and have bad taste in pizza, you're better off going to pizza hut. If not, then go to Alex's! more

Slop 5/7/2010

Pizza taste like the roller rink when i was 12. there is nothing that sets this pizza apart from the rest. If you want a good pie i dont think this is your place Pros: Finally done eating it Cons: Everything more

Horrible 5/1/2009

We have had a very hard time finding good pizza in Philadelphia since moving here 2 1/2 years ago (Philadelphia does not do pizza well) and Alex's is probably the worst we've had so far. The crust was so rock hard that we couldn't even eat it. We got the steak pizza which seemed to have some sort of ground hamburg on it. There was hardly any sauce or cheese on it. The large pizza was tiny and not filling at all. Pros: Nothing Cons: Terrible pizza more

A new twist on an old favorite 3/7/2009

One word - Delish Pros: Pizza is cheap and delish Cons: No delivery more

Hey to all the dissapointed alex's pizza lovers! I just wanted everyone to know that the pizza is back! One of the original pizza makers just bought the place! It is just like the old days! 6/9/2008

The pizza is back to its original recipe, the staff is amazingly friendly! Not like the past six years, it is like going back in time! Pros: Great fresh pizza, quality ingredients! more

Will Alex's Return to what I Remember 4/23/2008

Have lived in the area forty plus years. Been going to Alex's since I was a teen. The original owners back then were friendly, knew your name and gave you efficient service and consistant pies. Gravy was made on premises as was the dough. No Delivery but then it was nearby and not a big deal to go get it. Pies were also the lowest price anywhere in the area. After working overseas for many years I returned to Roxborough about two or three years ago and couldnt wait for my ""pie"". Very disappointed ! The original owner was long gone as well as all the ole staff. The pie wasn't bad but it wasn't the same. Different recipe or ingredients. The attitude was what turned me away. Twice I called to place an order and after many rings a man came on and shouted "" Call Back! "" and HUNG UP on me! How rude, The New owners lost my business and not just mine, I've heard they may have given up and sold to someone else. I dont see the same guys in there when I drive by. We'll see how that plays out. Stay tuned for an update. more

Good pizza, small town feel 11/1/2007

Finally I found a decent pizza place in the area without going into Center City. Not like New York, but still good pizza. Sweet sauce and a fun spiral of sauce and cheese. Hard to park in the area so bring someone to jump out and get it while you wait in the car or drive around the block. No delivery which doesn't help the parking situation any but its tolerable. Friendly people and fast service when you call ahead. Pros: Good pizza, better than anything on Ridge Cons: No parking to be found along the tiny streets more

classic pizza place 3/10/2007

This place is the classic neighborhood pizza place - cheap, no frills, fresh and absolutely delicious. yes, the staff isn't the nicest in the world, but the final product is what you're there for....and it's absolutely delicious. the pie is always fresh, piping hot, and dirt cheap. if you're having a movie night, or friends over for a low key night, this is the perfect pie. if you're looking for gourmet pizza, then you've got the wrong spot. parking might be tough, but that comes with the neighborhood...just throw your car in an illegal spot for a minute, light up the hazards, get in/ out and you're on your way. last comment is to make sure you call ahead to avoid waiting. enjoy. Pros: delicious, fresh, cheap, no frills, ready when they say it'll be ready Cons: parking, friendliness of the staff more

Change in recipe?? 11/20/2006

Alex's had been my favorite pizza in the Philadelphia area for years and each time I was home (I live in Virginia now), I would eagerly await the trek from Fort Washington to Alex's for one of their piping hot delicious pizzas. I was disappointed with my last visit., however. The pizza didn't taste the same. I'm not sure if they changed recipes or owners, but it wasn't as good as it used to be. I'm hoping it was just a fluke or that I caught them on a bad night. Pros: usually great pizza Cons: lack of parking more

Are we talking about the same place??? 8/27/2006

This was the worst pizza I have had since I moved here. Too much sauce, which also tasted terrible. The cheese was cheap and too much on it. The dough was not cooked and chewy. The only good thing was it was cheap so I didn't waste that much money. I am still looking for some good pizza in the Roxborough area if anyone has any real suggestions. more

I couldn't survive without this pizza! 7/5/2006

My husband & I live in the area and were referred by another couple. At first sight, the pizza strikes you as not-like-other pizzas because they bake it with the cheese on first and then swirl the oh-so-bodacious sauce over the cheese. Looks somewhat artsy, but after one-sclice you will be sure to be converted. We eat it 2x weekly and on movie nights. For $8.50 for a large pie, you cannot go wrong. We like the plain cheese best, adding more toppings just takes away from the raw beautiful taste of this pizza. Pros: Best Pizza Ever of All Time Cons: No Delivery more

Call your order in before going... 3/29/2006

Having lived in NYC for a short while and reading the preceding glowing reviews, I decided to give this place a try. Upon entering the establishment, I noted how busy the place was. I thought this was the reason for the less than receptive response from counter help. I was told in an abrupt manner that it would be over an hour wait if I wanted a pizza. No other assistance was offered after this interaction. As I stated earlier, I attributed this attitude to the atmosphere of chaos in the establishment and just left. The second time I attempted to patronize this establishment, I was with a friend. He attempted to place our order and was greeted with the same attitude by the counter help. If you really want this pizza, I recommend calling your order in, in advance. Pros: Seems popular Cons: Very busy, Poor customer service, Not too clean. more

Let me have a piece of that! 2/11/2005

I honestly can't tell the difference between pizzas. I love Domino's, but no pizza franchise delivers to my area. I almost gave up on great pizza until I read reviews on Alex's. We called for an order of large pepperoni pizza. It was a little hard to find, being on a quiet street corner off Ridge. When I walked in, I was pleased. The place was clean (good sign), there are THOUSANDS of pizza boxes (they make a lot of pizza), and they only make pizza. Alex's is really just pizza. We got our order, I opened it and wow, it was piping hot and looked incredibly delicious. My mouth began to water. I had a slice, and I was in thin-crust pepperoni heaven. Just enough cheese, sauce and crust. Needless to say, I ate the entire pizza in a night. Yum! Pros: Pizza more

New Yorker Approved 6/15/2004

OK, Philadelphians set your new yorker chip on the shoulder aside and listen to who knows. You tell me about steaks and I tell you about pizza. Alex's represents everything and nothing more than a pizza place should be. They are great in every facet of the pizza experience. If you don't get this you can't be helped. I've lived in Philly for six years and this is one the few legit pizza places around more

On my corner 2/4/2003

Alex's sits on the corner of my block and that has proved to be a huge problem for me simply because having access to the world's best pizza at any given time is not so good news for my girlish figure...but it's worth that extra workout time. Hands down, the best pizza around. more

Best of the Best, Way Ahead of the Rest 12/4/2002

Alex's Pizzeria, which is take-out only, is outstanding, attracting persons from suburban counties who love great Italian pizza, baked in a way that prevents puddles of grease from forming in and around the cheese and pepperoni and any other delectable toppings you might consider adding. The crust is thin and has a crisp-chewy texture that is as fresh as the ingredients used on Alex's top-of-the-line pizzas. Pros: Best ingredients, Super baking techniqu Cons: Takeout only, Very busy more
