Dreadfully expensive. Damn near the worst cut and color I have ever had. My neighbor has been going here for years and her hair looks fantastic. She has thin, fine hair and has always been happy with it. I, on the other hand, have coarse, thick hair. I had it cut/colored with partial highlights and it cost close to $200. If my hair looked great, I would not be complaining. The colorist did NOT do what I asked her to do and there was no way to tell what she did til I got home and my hair dried, since I never let anyone blow dry my hair, as I do not normally dry it myself. I picked up about 1/2 inch in the very front and said, I like when this is highlighted, so please highlight this part in addition to what you have already been doing. She ended up highlighting only the entire top of my head, meanwhile the rest of my hair is dark and it looks ridiculous. The stylist wasn't much better. The highlighted part looks as though it wasn't cut at all. My hair being coarse, I need the ends cut off quite frequently as it will frizz otherwise, My hair looks like straw and it has never looked this way before. This is the first time I have ever considered going back to a salon to have them fix my hair, but I am afraid they will mess it up even more. \r \r This is a quite fancy place, ladies like to be pampered and they do some extra touches for my friend who goes 1x a month but oddly not for me - but it's not enough to warrant a $60 haircut for the least experienced stylist. If money is no object and you can afford the top stylists, go for it. But I had talked myself into ""I deserve this now that I am 50"" and it totally is not worth it. I could have cut it myself and it would have looked the same. The only good thing is the location - fantastic restaurants and great boutique right next door! more

Alan Murphy Salons is overall a better than average salon- but the value was not there for me. The d?cor is nice and so is the staff. My haircut and color were very good. Here is my problem- the price for what you get and how long I was there. My cut and color with tip $250- time there 3 hours! I paid less in California for an equally good job and just as nice or nicer salon. I just can?t justify the price tag and 3 hours of my time for what I got. more

Really! - Not an Upscale Salon 1/4/2011

I initially visited the Salon for the first time because of a bad haircut somewhere else. I thought I needed to spend more money and go to an upscale salon. I was wrong. The first time I went there the stylist suggested I let my hair grow out for a while because the cut was so bad. I now went for my second visit and boy am I REALLY disappointed. My hair is so uneven; long pieces here and there very short pieces that are sticking straight up. I even went back the next day to see if she could fix it. She stated that this is what happens when you texturize hair. Oh well, so much for letting it grow out. I will now try to find someone else to fix this REALLY bad haircut. The salon itself is really nice, but all I want is a good haircut. more

Outstanding Service and Style!!! 10/9/2009

I recently visited Alan Murphy Salon for the first time after a referral from a friend. The salon was extremly clean and elegantly decorated. I was most happy with my new stylist Courtney. I told her exatly what i was looking for and she went to work. She even made a few suggestions that would make my idea even better. The final look was flawless. The techniques she used were very impressive. I have never walked out of a salon and felt like they achevied exatcly what i was looking for untill visiting Alan Murphy Salon. Pros: Superior Stylists Cons: None!!! more

WORST SALON EVER 10/2/2009

I had to worst expereance from the moment I walked in the door , I was ignored by staff, After 30 minutes had passed I asked the receptionist if thre was a problem, she rolled her eyes at me, overall bery unprofessiol. When I finally got to see a stylist it wasnt whom I had booked with I left the salon in tears. I asked for blonde highlights in my natural strawberry blonde hair, the stylist then told me that she ""didn't think it would look good with my skin tone) But I Told the stylist EXACLY what i wanted done. Then end result is horrible, I did not get blonde highlights, My hair is now a deep brown....this salon RUINED my hair, there is NO way to go from strawberry blonde to chocalte brown and then back t strawberry blonde!!! I cry evertime I look in the mirror. This has got to be the worst cut and color ive ever had and had to pay over 300 bucks while in tears in front of the entire salon stylist and clients, not was I embarrassed by the staff but on a daily basis now as well, due to Alan Murphys Salon.. DO NOT GO TO ALAN MURPHY for haair services, unless you want your locks ruined. Cons: rude uneducated staff, over priced, no talent stylist more

HORRIBLE!!! 10/1/2009

I went to have my hair trimmed...the girl who cut it didn't know how to cut hair so I've got uneven sides and now will have to cut off my hair to get it even...what should have been 1/2 an inch off will now probably end up being close to 5 inches off. This is not my first visit, but will DEFINITELY be my last...avoid this place like the plague!!! Cons: Terrible service and haircuts. more

Great experience, beautiful style, well worth the price! 6/11/2009

I have gone to Alan Murphy since the beginning of 2009 and I great so many comments from people I know and don't know about how pretty my color and style is. I have lots of gray and looked very straggled. Leigh Moore and Andrea Thue have given me beautiful blonde that blends as my hair grows and a layered style that allows me flexibility in my styles. I look younger and rested - without surgery! Pros: Easy to work with, great style and color more

Great Cut 3/10/2009

I decided today I needed to treat myself to a great cut. I knew that going to Alan Murphy Salons I would pay more, but I wanted a stylist to tell me what kind of cut I needed, rather than someone just guessing. I got that at ALan Murphy. Danielle took charge and gave me a great cut. THey are worth the money. I did not even have an appointment. They always look so busy on Saturdays, but they took me in with a smile. I will Be back. more

Best Salon I Have EVER Been To 10/2/2008

I have been going to Alan Murphy Salon for a little over a year now, after being a loyal customer to another salon for 8 years - and it has been the best change ever! My hair has never looked better. Yvette (hairstylist) and Amber (colorist) and true artists. My color and cut are always perfect and I get compliments everywhere I go. I find the entire staff to be very friendly and outgoing, and the salon itself is simply gorgeous. I'll never go anywhere else! Pros: Excellent service, beautiful salon Cons: a little pricey - but well worth it! more

HIGH PRICES... 9/22/2008

When I go to a Salon, most of all I want a good haircut and color. The tea and pampering is nice, but not what I came for. Pros: Beautiful Salon Cons: Very high prices more

Great Colorist !! 10/18/2007

Leigh Moore , is a great up and coming colorist who specializes in corective color. I had been to a post oak salon very well known and left with yellow roots and white ends with every color in the middle. Leigh fixed my color and i will never leave her !! Pros: Staff , apointment times Cons: ambience more

Great Service and Style 3/26/2007

The Alan Murphy salon has seen quite a bit of changes yes, but all for the better if you ask me. They are actually moving locations in January 08 to Louetta and 249 which is a great location!!! The service and atmosphere are something that you normally see in high end salons therefore, the prices are comparable to such establishments. If you want a quick cut from someone who is paid $7 an hour and specializes in kids and mens cuts, this is not the place for you. However, if you want the look and feel of a classy salon that prides itself on customer service and excellence then it is definitley for you. Keep in mind the price you pay isn't just for the product or end result rather it's the environment that is created by Alan and his staff. Pros: Great service and atmosphere! more

Pricey 9/16/2006

I have a customer of Alan Murphy for years. I have seen complete change in staff with several employees quitting all at one time. Recently they have regrouped and new faces have been seen. Their prices continue to climb. Getting color and style used to be all included. Now since last fall of 2005, its a higher price. You must pay for style on top of paying for color. Explanation for the Alan Murphy salon, other salons have been contacted and they are charging, so now Alan Murphy has followed the lead. Pros: Only a few good cutters Cons: over priced due to owner and location more

worst place vere, never ever go there!!!!!! 9/12/2006

I had my hair long and wanted it cut in layers, not so hard to do for a hairstylist. The results were terrible not only did they cut my hair differently than what i wanted but one side was longer than the other. I told them and the only thing they did was get mad with me. I ended up leaving, paying 80 dollars and go some other place and have it cut really short. My advise to you is to never go there, You will lose your money and especially you hair!!!! If you go at least dont have it cut from a skinny girl (dont remember her name) with short blond hair. Her stand is at the left side against the wall , the second or third chair. Pros: nothing Cons: everything more

A little overpriced 8/20/2005

After searching the net for reviews on salons in Houston I came across this one. I figured since it was ranked as one of the top 200 salons in the country it had to be good. I, like many out there have has some horrific hair stories, so I decided to give Alan Murphy a try. I will say the staff with the exception of the receptionist was very accomadating and friendly. The color specialist did a great job as did the stylist who cut my hair although she didn't really style it the way I wanted. I did bring a picture of the style I wanted and she really didn't come close to the picture. I do think it is ""very"" overpriced. For the color, cut and supposed style, with tip I paid $220.00...pretty pricey! Pros: friendly staff, excellent products, Aveda Products Cons: too pricey more

great place to get your hair done 12/8/2004

I have been a client of Alan Murphy Salon for two years now. I have had nothing but a great expericene every time I go. I have been to several salon's around town and I have not liked the way they cut my hair. They made me look as if I lived in the 1980's with the perm and the feathered look. The stylist at Alan Murphy Salon are up to date on the lastest style that are coming out. I absolutley love my hair. and I enjoy the catering to the clients that each stylist does. They are very customer service oreinted. Pros: great customer servic, Good Parking, lastest fashion more

DO NOT 5/17/2004

horribly over priced snooty stylists stylist have no concern for what you want just a horrible salon more

worst ever 2/19/2004

What a total disappointment. I thought I could trust that this salon would give a better than satisfactory haircut - was I wrong. It was the worst haircut I have ever received. It apparently does no good to tell the stylist what you want - they are going to cut it the way they want no matter what and do a bad job at that. Pros: nice atmosphere more
