Good food but not baby friendly 5/14/2008

The food was good but not great. The noise level in the restaurant was medium noisy and my 5 month year old was a little fussy but not screaming by any means and one of the restaurant staff said people where complaining about the noise. We had reservations for 5:45 so it wasn't that late. To be on the safe side don't bring babies. Pros: Food is served quickly more

The Best! 6/5/2006

I live in SF. And even though there are many Indian restaurants here, I still come to Berkeley for the best Indian restaurant, Ajanta. Pros: Ambiance, Great curry more

Take it from an Indian... the worst in the area 6/1/2006

Ajanata by far has the worst Indian food in bay area. I was very excited to dine here after reading the reviews on this site. I was soooo disappointed. The food was terrible, the place was too crowded. They put way too many tables in a small space. And to top it all, it was expensive. Service was horrible. They made my food too spicy even after I told them to make it milder. When I told the waiter that the food was too spicy, he told me that no it was okay. After I insisted that they give me a milder dish, the waiter took my dish back, watered it down and brought it back out. You can find better food and cheaper in other cities of SF bay area. STAY AWAY from this place. Cons: Expensive, Terrible food, Too crowded more

BAD FOR VEGETARIANS 5/24/2006

Please note had two terrible vegetarian meals here in the last two weeks. The badal jaam with only 2 slices of eggplant worth about $0.25 for $6 as a main entree was inadequate in size & overpriced. Next time had the New This Month vegetarian special, which was described with many ingredients. But when it came, the dish was exactly the same as the spinach & potato side dish served with rice but only with vegetables. It was like eating the same dish twice. Our waiter didn't think to alert me to this redundancy. Attentive wait staff that is not helpful overall. Would not go again. more

Amazing Indian Cuisine 9/28/2005

I have been to Ajanta quite a few time now with my wife. I have been meaning to write a review for this place since it is truly something special. As soon as you walk in the door the staff is ver attentive and helpful. Their menu is extensive and also changes every month wich makes it very interesting andexciting. Both me and my wife like our food spicy, Ajanta has 5 levels of spice (the 6th level is sort of a secret and involves habanero if your interested) and they always make it just right. Not much else I can say other than this place is truly a treasure and worth traveling to. Pros: New Dishes Monthly, Service, Delicious Food Cons: None. more

I want to keep it a secret! 5/31/2005

Ajanta is by far the best Indian food I have ever had. I always ask the owner what he recommends and I am always amazed at the food. The staff are simply lovely people. Call ahead for reservations. I would really rather keep them a secret, because they are so good they will soon be overrun with customers! more

So good! 3/21/2005

This place is so good. The food is very flavorful and the breads are wonderful. Make sure you're hungry though because portions are plentiful. The wait can get long on the weekends though so go early. more

Our Favorite For Years 5/6/2004

We have tried most of the Indian restaurants in the Bay Area and Ajanta is our favorite, by far. We have been going there for years now because the food is always inventive and delicious, the ambience is inviting, the service fast and attentive -who could ask for anything more? The prices are also very fair. Some people overlook that the cost of the meal includes naan bread as well as rice and vegetables, chutneys/dips and pappadum, some or all of which other restaurants charge for separately. The changing menu every month keeps it interesting, the wine list is outstanding and the desserts are beyond compare. We continue to try other places because we love Indian food, but we always come back to Ajanta! Pros: Inventive tasty food, Nice ambience, Terrific service more

It really is distinctive 7/22/2003

Ajanta is one of the better Indian restaurants in the Bay Area, despite its lack of authenticity. Rather than duplicate authentic Indian standards, Ajanta plays with them, tweaking the dishes into something unique. They even present the dishes in a swank, Parisian manner. But don't let that throw you off - the food is usually quite good, and always amazingly fresh and high quality. The Maloni Sabzi and the Dhaniwal Murg Korma are intensely flavorful, rich, tangy, and uniquely prepared. The Malabar Chicken Curry is closer to authentic India, and is actually the same soupy stuff usually served with dosas. The portions can be skimpy, and some of the appetizers are kind of a joke, but overall it's one of the better Indian restaurants you'll find in Berkeley. If you're looking for authenticity, go to Cafe Raj down the street, Vik's, or the amazing Udupi Palace on Univeristy and MLK. more
