Watch the billing!!! 7/10/2015

They phoned to remind me of my coming appointment - said bring a stool sample, if I could. So I did. (sounded to me as though it was included in the exam - wHAT was I THINking!!) (If I hadn't thought it was included, I wouldn't have brought it in - the dog has long been very well - unaffected by parasites, worms.) They charged me $47 - the cost - to test it. ... - nothing found, as I knew. As I complained to them about this I remembered that the last time I was there (I'd forgotten, or I would have found a different vetr., they included stuff among which was a mouthwash - $23!! - that I wouldn't have taken had they asked. It seemed to come with the visit - then showed as that expense later. I guess I just trusted them so didn't check the bill. They also did a tooth cleaning - long ago so I don't remember the price - on my dog that they said had gums in pretty good shape! The work was done with anesthesia! Very expensive - for me, especially since it was not particularly necessary. I feed my dogs mainly dry food. When I went to return the mouthwash it being so long ago it turns out this unopened container had an EXPIRATion date! a few months previous, although they told me they wouldn't have taken it as a return regardless; but that they couldn't even consider it since it was expired. Their care is likely as good as the best, which I think is very common in this area - well, in many places. But their billing practice is unacceptable and I won't go there again. They should at least have credited back the stool test cost - or at least 1/2 of it! Something to indicate they'd made an error - again! more

Experience was positive 1/4/2011

My husband and I first came to Abbey Pet Hospital at the recommendation of one of the local rescue organizations. We had just adopted skinny “Little Love” from the pound. This one really needed our care. We made an appointment and our first experience with Dr. Prutton was a positive one. We updated all the vaccinations and had the appropriate tests performed. We had everything taken care of within 20-30 minutes. They have all the in-house blood machines. Dr. Pruttn also provided useful information on territorial aggression associated with bringing a new pet home. I thought the facility was nice too. We left with the feeling of relief and excitement. more

The staff is very helpful. 12/29/2010

I chose Abbey Pet Hospital based on several reviews. The staff is very helpful and the wait wasn’t long. The three times I was in the office there were lots of people with their pets; they all seemed to like the vets. I see Dr. Virk with both of my dogs and my one cat. She is very nice and has been able to explain very complex medical issues in a simple straight forward way. My dog needed an ultrasound to diagnose a problem in her stomach. I am very pleased with the medical attention my pets have received at Abbey Pet Hospital. The staff at the front desk are all so beautiful. more

Abbey pet hospital is terrific. 12/27/2010

" I am a dog trainer who has known and worked with Dr. Prutton for many years. I work with several rescue groups and personally own 6 dogs. Abbey Pet Hospital is terrific and we are lucky to have it right in El Cerrito. I feel comfortable bringing my gang to Abbey Pet Hospital. They do their best to meet the needs of every animal that walks through the door. The newest member of my family “Rodney” just received his last round of shots, he already weighs 40 pounds and he’s only 3 months old! The girls at the front desk love him. I give Abbey Pet Hospital the highest recommendation. " more

Just wanted to thank everyone. 12/23/2010

Just wanted to thank everyone at Abbey Pet Hospital for caring for my entire extended family. You were just great with my sweet (aggressive) 13 pound “Lilly”. I know she can be handful. The surgery you did to repair her eyelid after the fight she got in at the dog park was just terrific and the follow-up care including the many phone exchanges went way beyond normal care. Thanks for taking such good care of my little one. more

I REALLY LIKE THIS PLACE 12/15/2010

We actually stopped going to the bet because the last dental at the other hospital was $900.00. At Abbey Pet Hospital we can afford to have our boxers teeth cleaned two times a year. The facility is so clean, the girls behind the desk are sweet and you never feel like your getting services you don’t need. I really like this place. more

They saved my dog! 12/13/2010

I am in grad school at Berkeley and just moved here from Illinois. When our dog ate a bunch of snail bait (we don’t have snails in Illinois) the teachers in my department told me to take him to Abbey Pet Hospital. They SAVED his life! We were in the process of looking for a vet and we found the best. A caring, beautiful staff and great doctors. We now know to keep “Toby” out of the back yard. more

The best place to take your beloved pet..... 12/2/2010

Abbey Pet Hospital is the best place to take your beloved pet for any surgery. Dr. Prutton is an excellent surgeon. He did patellar luxatin surgery on my dog three months ago. My Gizmo is doing great, chasing the cats. This is the second dog that’s needed surgery. Both out comes were great. I would highly recommend Dr. Prutton for any bone surgery. more

Very affordable 11/29/2010

I have one cat and she loves going to Abbey Pet Hospital. We usually see Dr. Bennet, but it doesn’t matter, they are all good. When I bring Snickers in she bounces around like she’s going to a party. The staff is really nice, the hospital is very affordable. My cat loves Abbey Pet Hospital. more

Abbey Pet Hospital rocks. We have 7 cats and they all like going to the vet. The dentals are reasonable, so my cats teeth are always bright and shiny! more

Love the people at abbey pet hospital 11/19/2010

My dog had two very serious emergencies last month and Dr. Prutton took her in right away. Two of the girls speak Spanish THANK GOD! Believe me, when my baby is sick I forget how to speak English. Anyway, my baby is fine now. Dr. Prutton fixed her broken leg and infected eye. I love those people at Abbey Pet Hospital. more

recommend them to everyone 11/18/2010

My two dogs Lola and Charlie love going to the vet to see Dr.Virk. She is warm and friendly and she loves my crazy dogs! They jump up and down when the technician takes their vital signs. We have always received great care at Abbey Pet Hospital. I would recommend them to everyone. more

Truly become kind of an extended family 11/17/2010

My only complaint is that Abbey Pet Hospital can get very busy. Everyone wants to take their pets to see the doctors at Abbey. They have separate dog and cat sides and lots of parking. This is important to me because I use a cane when I walk. The staff and Doctors have truly become kind of an extended family. When my mom died last year, I received a card from them. They had cared for her dog many years ago. It was a simple, loving gesture to have someone remember your 90 year old mother. I cried. more

The vets are great. 10/26/2010

We found Abbey Pet Hospital off the internet when we moved to the East Bay.They have a section called "Abbey's Dearest" on the sidebar. Wonderful pictures of their patients. The vets are great. They call you back. Amazing! We love our pets and feel lucky to have found a good place for them. more

I have had great experiences at Abbey Pet Hospital 10/25/2010

I have had great experiences at Abbey Pet Hospital in good times and bad with my many cats. When my poor old cat "Alice" was terminal, the entire staff was caring and helpful. It's a very hard decision to put a beloved pet to sleep. I cried so hard. About a week later Dr. Prutton called to make sure I was okay and to tell me he had a beautiful Tabby that needed a good home. more

I am grateful to Abbey and Dr. Bennett 10/25/2010

"Yesterday morning my beloved chicken injured her toe badly and was bleeding profusely. I took her immediately to the vet clinic nearest my house but they don't treat chickens and, as they put it, they are ""not an emergency clinic"". I raced to Abbey and as luck would have it the doctor on duty, David Bennett, was a specialist in birds and exotic animals. He treated my chicken with care and sensitivity, as did his wonderful vet tech whose name unfortunately I didn't catch. My pet is home now with a pink bandage on her amputated toe, which Dr. Bennett tried to save but it was too damaged. He sent her home with pain med, antibiotic, and an Elizabethan collar in case she tries to peck at her foot. I am grateful to Abbey and Dr. Bennett for a happy ending to a traumatic morning." more

His love for the animals is obvious, and he is very patient with their guardians. 10/22/2010

I've been taking my 3 cats there for well over a dozen years now. I'm particularly fond of Dr. Prutton. While he isn't big on the charm, his love for the animals is obvious, and he is very patient with their guardians. I like to ask lots of questions and have things explained quite fully to me, and he gives the information that I need to feel comfortable with the treatment recommendations. He also has a very common sensible approach and doesn't overly recommend expensive tests which I really appreciate. more

I'm happy. 10/20/2010

"My husband and I found a stray cat and thought it might be pregnant. We were advised to take her into a vet. I called around and after hearing everything from "we're not taking any new clients" to "we can't see you until late next week" and were given APH's number. I called and the tech on the line said "yes, let's get you in today". I saw Dr. Vurk (sp?). She was very gentle and informative of our choices with what to do with the cat. We chose to get her spayed and adopt her out ourselves. Her surgery was later that day and I picked her up the following day. I was given copies of her record for the new owner and a list of instructions on how to monitor the incision from the spay. I'm happy to say that within 3 days, she found a home." more
