Fantastic Bar during Castro Street Festival 10/25/2009

I was in San Francisco Sept 25-Oct 5, 2009. I had a great time and 440 was a frequent stop. I met lots of great new friends and, overall, enjoyed each visit to the 440. Pros: Great crowd, great music Cons: Gets a bit crowded and hot... more

Friendly staff. Great place to meet people. 7/29/2007

Some of the friendliest staff to be found. An added bonus is that most of them are damned hot. Great drinks and a good value. Friendly customers and it is easy to strike up a conversation. \r \r Great location in the heart of the Castro. Lots of regulars stop in, but also a lot of tourists. The staff is great at making tourists feel welcome. \r \r Totally different atmosphere during the day than at night. Nighttime can bring a crowded bar with a great mix of people. Daytime is much quieter with a lot more chatting between the regulars and staff. Pros: Great staff, attentive service. Good Happy Hour value Cons: As sun dips in the sky, it reflects off the building across the street making it hard to see toward the front of the bar. more

Nice neighborhood bar that's still trying to find itself... 10/23/2006

The old bar was called Daddy's. It had a great collection of bartenders that fit the name of the place. It had a leather curtain for a door. It was a man's bar. Sadly, those days are gone.\r \r The bartenders are all nice still, but the old guard was pretty much pushed out or fired. The leather curtain is gone, and now the generic name of 440 Castro is on the window. But the same regulars hang out there, and it can get pretty jammed on weekend evenings. Generally, during the day the place is really dead except for a few regulars.\r \r Unlike the Edge, this bar has beer busts and all sorts of events. Want to meet the SF FOG rugby team? Want to meet a gay softball team? Feel like meeting adult industry stars now and then? 440 Castro has events that will have you mixing it up with all sorts of fun, and often hot guys.\r \r But the bar is still trying to find itself. It's been remodeled, and has a certain roughness to it, and the theme nights (like beer Mondays and Underwear Night) are still fun things to do. It's definitely one of the two manly bars in the Castro (The Edge being the other one), and the two bars seem to complement each other far more than they compete. Pros: Friendly staff with great memories, quiet place for drinks during the day, fun weekend events. Cons: Doesn't seem to have a clear identity of itself, and there is a certain lacking in the atmosphere. You want it to be nastier somehow. more

Nicely re-decorated! But the Service is seriously lacking! 8/13/2006

If you don't mind waiting forever for your cocktail this ""has-been"" bar is now one of the hot spots in The Castro. The drinks can be a little on the week side and the attidude from the staff can be a bit overwhelming. Mondays are ""underwear night"" and you may see mor than you need to! A great alternative to the usual video bars, but this place needs an upgrade in staff. The clientele can be a little aggresive, but that is the ""Daddys"" tradition. Pros: Location, Location, Location! Cons: Exactly, how long do I have to wait for service? more

Creepy Beyond Belief 11/10/2002

Daddy's is right on Castro St., so they can't enforce a leather dress code because so many people would protest. Therefore, it attracts the worst of both the leather community and the ""civilian"" dressed crowd. Old, white, creepy guys who leer at you until you are nauseated, drunk Asian guys with backpacks and white shoes groping you, and guys who look like Lurch on the make. For good leather, stick to the Loading Dock. Pass up this creep zone. Pros: Good music Cons: Creeps, dorks, jerks more

a little seedy, but fun 9/9/2002

This is one of, if not the only, leather-ish bar in the Castro. The crowd is older, and, the bar is pretty dark. I do like the music here and the bartenders have always been very nice. This is a fine alternative if the usual Castro scene isn't your bag. more
