Authentic French cooking & Local Panash! 8/22/2011

Pssssst! Listen....this extremely good food. Beautifully conceived. Lovingly prepared. This is obviously run by someone who loves food. (Keep up the good work Michelle!) The blue cheese salad with hazelnuts, trout almandine, bourbon bread pudding, chocolate cake, and nice selection of wines, thoughfully served...you could not ask for more. Truly. Go and enjoy. more

Horrible experience 4/4/2010

I ordered a mesclun salad at lunch (NOT the 3 for $15 lunch). It arrived with yellow and slimy leaves in it. I pulled those leaves out and asked the hostess if the kitchen could make me another (this after she blindly stared at the offending leaves, like I was crazy to complain about them). A second salad came out, slightly better than the first, but still with slimy leaves in it. I asked the server Chelsea to take it back, and told her that I just didn't want to have a salad anymore. Three minutes later, the chef/owner (I think) comes out and proceeds to lecture me about how I should expect imperfect leaves in the salad because it's organic. I asked him if that includes yellow and slimy leaves, and he reiterated that it was organic, from a local farm, which he named. No apology from any of the staff, no offer to try to set things right. I called the local farm later that day, and turns out they aren't even selling mesclun mix yet, it's too early in the season. Hmmm.... Chelsea never said ""excuse me' when interrupting our conversation to take our order. She didn't give me a second or two to catch my breath when I first showed up before asking what I wanted to drink. (Hint, servers, don't ASK what we want to drink, make SUGGESTIONS, like iced tea, lunch cocktail, something....you're supposed to sell, not just carry plates). The hostess never smiled, no one ever smiled. They just seemed pissed off that they were busy (why, I don't know on both counts) and that we were a late lunch table with two women. We didn't order cheap, we weren't rude, we tried to be reasonable. My bread and butter plate were never replaced after they took it away with the dead leaves, and we had to ask for bread and butter, for which they made us feel like we were demanding. I sent the owners a letter that afternoon. It's been a week now. As they don't seem to care, I am now resorting to this forum. I will never go back again. Thank you. A Great Time 3/8/2010

The only reason I came to this place cuz it was one of the ""Best Of City Search"" ... I didnt even know it was a French Restaurant until I walked in and read the menu ... Anyway, it was a great experience; I came in with my best girl trying to impress her, but not trying too hard, and it wasnt over the top, like some places in downtown Seattle.\r \r The waiter treated us well; we came in on a Friday afternoon, we sat in a nice romantic seat in the corner away from the rest of the crowd; the waiter explained the menu, without trying to sell us something expensive ... we started off with some wine, just so happens it was 'happy hour'. We had the Mussels and Lentel Soup to start, my date had the Salad with olive oil n salt and Frites, and I had the Burger n Frites; and we finished off with some exotic cheeses; with some more wine ...\r \r We had an unrushed and very romantic time ... we arrived at 150p and left at 410p ... the waiter was very accommodating n friendly; of course at that time, it was only 10 to 25% full ... If youre looking for a romantic date place, with good service n food?! ... definitely go at a later time so youll get the best service ... Owner would not honor gift certificate for $20 given for terrible service for a previous dining experience. Owner was very rude and has no concept of good customer service. Given these tough economic times it is hard to believe that a business owner would care so little about his customers. Not worth the money and should be out of business. Cons: Terrible customer service, average food, overpriced more

Nice Reprieve 9/4/2008

A nice reprieve from most dining options in Seattle. The service can be a little shakey but the food, decor, atmosphere, wine, drinks etc are traditionally excellent. They tend to use local ingredients so their menu changes often which is nice. 35th St. Bistro is becoming a classic Seattle restaurant and bistro. They have a new lounge which is ok - their dining room is where you want to grab lunch or dinner. I hear they have a very nice yet busy brunch on the weekend. Pros: Food, wine, atmosphere - overall experience is excellent Cons: Service hot and cold more

I was really excited to go to 35th St Bistro after reading the reviews, so I made reservations for my husband's birthday. I needn't have bothered, it was a weeknight and there were hardly three tables that were occupied. That is why I was so surprised when it took them 20-25 minutes to bring us bread.\r \r The service was slow over all, but I didnt mind. It went along well with the music and ambience. Now the food- I ordered the beet salad which was good and my husband ordered the scallops which was flavorful. For our entrees, I ordered their pan roasted chicken.. it looked yummy but it was absolutely lacking any flavor. It was actually hard for me to eat the whole thing. I felt like I was eating boiled chicken. My husband ordered the rabbit which was just alright, again, lacking flavor.\r \r And for dessert we had the fruit tart which was once again average.. Overall it was a disappointment. Totally not worth the $110 I spent on both of us. I saw a lot of people having their burger and fries.. maybe that is their specialty!! Can we get more of these restaurants? What do I mean? Ok...they use way cool ingredients AND they make it taste really, really good. Great atmosphere, too - they take care of you, its great music, nice ambience - not trying hard to be cool / sophisticated / new yorkish in so far that they don't try hard at being cool - they just are..this is 35th st. bistro. They use locally farmed food stuffs. Nice. Their meat comes from pasture animals - no hormones or antibiotics. It's just nice. No hormones w/ that - thanks. \r These are the types of places we need to get more of here. Grab their bistro burger - I got it the last time I was in and it was tight. My wife got the braised short ribs - quite nice. \r They could turn up the music a little bit though. Other than that...spot on. Nice french bistro experience w/ some credibility behind it... Pros: The food - ambience - music Cons: volume more
