Take an upscale martini bar from houston. Remove half of the rich pretentious snobs, all of the gold-digging call-girls, throw in some intelligent doctors, some local business owners, a biker or two, and a few aspiring artists and you get 21. Do not come here if you don't have social skills. These people will see right through all the snobby BS and, after you leave, the regulars will use your ego as a dart board. My favorite thing about 21: People remember your face. Come a few times and everyone from the bartenders to the owners to the regulars will start getting to know you. And they're friendly people, if your attitude is right. They'll remember your name, your favorite drinks, and what you do or don't like about your job. A little smoky at times, but that's a bar for you. One thing I love about Galveston is that you don't need to wear your paycheck on your sleeve. Anyone will talk to you, and all you have to do is talk back. Also, good music is key to any bar. Not top 20's, Hip-Hop, or R&B but live entertainment. Thurs - Sat night will not leave you disappointed. Wed night is wine tasting, where you'll enjoy good wine and some of the more consistent regulars, who are a blast. As far as the bouncer is concerned...I've been going there for 2 1/2 years and haven't had a single issue, so maybe someone said the wrong thing. If you want a bar with arrogant snobs, ditzy fake girls, and a rude staff who want your resume and tax bracket before serving you a drink, I can think of several places up in Houston. For an awesome night with real class, 21 will never leave you disappointed. more

The guys that run this place are first class. A repectable clientel and bartenders. I am not worthy but you might be. Say hello to John. He will treat you well more

it's a martini bar! 2/3/2006

typical galveston...could be so much better but apathy prevails on the island. my main gripe...when I ask for a saphirre martini up, dry; the wait staff should not have to ask, "is that gin or vodka?" more

Rude, rude, rude 5/22/2005

We reserved a booth for my 30th birthday for 10:30pm. We were told we would have free entry and to just ask for the manager at the door. When we arrived, the doorman said he had not heard of the reservation and told us all to pay. We kindly asked to speak to the manager or owner. He said no and told us to pay. We were furious. The owner finally came out and said they couldn't hold the reservation and we should go elsewhere because we were such trouble-makers. It was an ugly scene - I was in tears and there was yelling... 21 did not keep their word and the door man and owner handled it all terribly. My birthday was ruined. This place does not deserve our/your patronage. And they have the same cover bands all the time anyways! Pros: Good drinks, Nice when empty Cons: Rude door man, Rude owner, Bad music more

  • In Short
The well-heeled flock to this martini bar's popular location in the historic Jacobs Building. The scene inside can best be described as eclectic elegance. Coffee tables, lounge chairs and oversized, custom-made sofas with diffused polka-dot patterns dominate the darkened, L-shaped room. For those in search of a little privacy, two separate booths are tucked into one corner. At the other end of the room is the hustle and bustle of the stand-up bar and a single, pink-felt pool table.
