The 14 Karats is awesome! In addition to the laid back (dog friendly) atmosphere in the store, the staff is extremely knowledgeable and helpful. Jon (the owner) has been a staple on College Avenue for over 30 years. He know most customers by first name and has created beautiful custom jewelry for generations. The selection in the store is unique and quality and if you don't find what you are looking for they will make it for you! They make everything right there in the store - No generic, mass produced, over priced stock you find in most jewelry stores. My husband & I got our custom wedding rings there and we love them! We pop in whenever we are in town just to say hi and get our rings cleaned. If you are in the market for something extra special check them out! more

Warning: Owner Lost My Diamond Studs, Claimed No Insurance, Refused to Pay 12/25/2007

I left a pair of GIA certified diamond earrings at 14 Karats to have them reset for my daughter's wedding, which was just 6 weeks off. When I called the next week, the owner (John) said he couldn't find them but was looking and would call me. i had to call him repeatedly for information. After several weeks, he said he had no insurance (!) and tried to replace them with a pair of non-GIA certified stones, which I declined to accept. At that point, now just a few weeks before my daughter's wedding, he refused to compensate me for the earrings so I could shop for another pair. At that point I filed a claim with my own insurance company, who quickly paid me several thousand dollars more than I requested of the shop owner, and then sued him. Months later, after he was sued, he "found" the original earrings. Those acting for the insurance company were of the opinion that his behavior was sleazy and suspicious. I share that opinion. Best Custom Jeweler Around! 6/30/2007

We adore this place! The service is very helpful (family owned), and they can turn aroudn custom resizing in just a couple hours. They also manufacture all their own jewelry so our wedding bands could be special -- they even make jewelry out of Palladium! In the workshop, which is visible from the store, they have a few full time jewelers. This place simply can't be beaten for quality, price or service. It's worth the trip to have everything done right. Pros: Everything custom can be done almost immediate -- they have their own full time jewelers! Cons: None more

Pretty designs 9/6/2006

I've never worked with them myself but my friend used them for her engagement ring and I thought they did a fantastic job. The setting looks sturdy and the prices weren't so outrageous either from what I've heard. more

good at first, bad with follow up 11/2/2005

When I first went here to custom design my engagement ring, I was impressed with how helpful the staff was and willing to work with me on the design. However, once I decided to go with them, they were bad with the execution. I found that I had to call them frequently to check on the status of my ring, and visited them more than once, thinking the ring was further along and then surprised at how little they had gotten done with it. In the end, it was fine, but it was more of a headache than it was worth. more
